The three rings

Everything
you see has three
concentric rings
which are the body
the mind
and spirit

You will find
spirit at the pit

It is the innermost
ring
and prone to boast
of being
a thing’s essence

And everyone knows
that it is from essence
that manifestations grow

Next comes mind

It is sandwiched by and binds
the seed and the rind
which one always finds
first
because it
is the grossest

Spirit
is the smallest circle
and according to physics
the finest particle
is the most atomic

But logic
raises a point and makes
it stick

For example (it says) take
a stone’s
descent into water

When it is thrown
the outer
ring
is the first
to come into being
and therefore must
give rise to what follows

Yet nobody knows
more than what shows
and that is that rings flow
outward from some one source

Thus an argument
about the course
of movement
can be
developed from both sides

All agree that the degree
to which each resides
in a given thing
is an index
of its evolutionary footing
but things grow complex
when it comes to whether
an organism’s fate
is to transcend matter
or become inanimate
